Located in Morningside Lenox Park, the Daniel Johnson Nature Preserve and the adjacent Herbert Taylor Park offer an urban oasis for nature enthusiasts in the heart of Atlanta's midtown. These City of Atlanta parks are home to some of the last remnants of old-growth hickory beech forest that once covered this area when the Muscogee Native Americans ceded the land to the US Government in the 1820s. Some trees in the parks are estimated to be 150-180 years old, and possibly older. The area also contains several champion trees, including American Hazelnut, native Mulberry, and Cottonwood. Extensive populations of Trillium and Sweet Cicely are also found here. The parks offer visitors a glimpse into the area's rich natural history, with soil networks characteristic of old-growth forests and distinct habitats, including a low wetland area in the southeastern part of the park and a nearby slope in the southwestern section. The confluence of Rock Creek and the South Fork of Peachtree Creek is a particularly unique habitat in the park. The parks' trails and natural setting along the creeks offer a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and are a favorite spot for archaeologists and nature lovers alike. The Herbert Taylor Park and Daniel Johnson Nature Preserve were made possible by the support of some of Atlanta's historically significant families. Today, active Friends groups are working to restore the area's habitat and support its diverse wildlife population. Visitors can join in workdays or donate to support these efforts, which aim to preserve this urban wilderness for future generations to enjoy.
