Lake Charlotte Nature Preserve in Southeast Atlanta is now open to the public after cleanup and groundwork. The 216-acre mature forest is home to shagbark hickories, white oaks, and beech trees and is part of the plan to create a large forest park along the South River. Located near industrial areas and a landfill, the preserve has a history of suburbanization, environmental racism, and equity efforts. Visitors can explore the nature trail and remnants of old lodges on the property. On-street parking and the Route 55 MARTA bus are available. The purchase of the preserve was funded by the city from tree cutting fees and was bought from the Conservation Fund to prevent development. The forest is home to wildlife and its ecosystem is protected by the design of the preserve.
